THE ANNUAL LIVE AUCTION AND DINNER, “THE BIG EVENT”
A HUGE SUCCESS!
The first year we were in the tent with dirt for a floor, we watched a huge thunderstorm roll in on Friday evening that left us Saturday morning with ankle deep mud. But, with the help of Charlie Blue, his magic pellets and hay, and a host of volunteers, by evening everything was dry.
The second year we were in the tent, we had gravel for a floor, and again, we watched a huge thunderstorm roll in on Friday evening that left us Saturday morning with half of the tent down and the tables (already decorated) upside down. Again, a host of volunteers came and by evening (barely) we were again ready.
The third time in the tent, this time with a concrete floor, we were definitely charmed. We, yet again, watched a thunderstorm roll towards us but this time it stayed ten miles to the south.
Approximately 350 people enjoyed Red Stegall and Don Hedgpeth on Friday evening in the tent. They performed for over two hours and delighted everyone with stories, poems and songs, and at the end of the concert Red sat and signed many, many copies of his book, “Born to This Land”.
Saturday was a beautiful day and approximately 325 people came again to enjoy a wonderful dinner and participate in a fun auction. We had some wonderful costumes and handed out prizes for best dressed male and female – Mr. & Mrs. Sherman Jones, and Best Table, which was a tie – Leanne and Lee Donner table, and Janet and Roland Jackson table.
B.C. Bennett for the 21st year was our auctioneer and his partner, George Hallmark, kept us completely entertained the entire evening. With the help of some creative spotters, the auction broke last year’s record. Sue and Chester Posey donated $25,000 to begin our reverse match donations, and $88,100 was raised to go into our endowment fund.
By 11:30 the tent flaps were down, the lights unplugged, and then it rained.
This event was made possible only with the great help of many, many volunteers.
